Research Areas

James Crabtree is a London-based geopolitical analyst and author with extensive experience working in Asia.

He is an adjunct senior fellow with CNAS, a distinguished visiting fellow in the Asia program of the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, a nonresident distinguished fellow at the Asia Society in New York, and a columnist for Foreign Policy magazine. Crabtree was previously the Singapore-based head of the International Institute for Strategic Studies Asia, where he organized the Shangri-La Dialogue defense summit, and an associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. He is writing his second book, The Perimeter: The Struggle for Supremacy in the Pacific, due to be published in 2027 by W. W. Norton & Company. His first book, The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India’s New Gilded Age, was shortlisted for the FT/McKinsey business book of the year.
