Voices from the Field: A Discussion with General Sir David Richards

CNAS was pleased to host General Sir David Richards, British Chief of the General Staff, for a discussion on British engagement in Afghanistan and the region as well as the future of defense cooperation between the United States and the United Kingdom.

General Sir David Richards was appointed Chief of the General Staff in August 2009.  Previously, he served as Commander of ISAF from May 2006 to February 2007, a position he held while serving as the UK’s Commander Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. On completion of NATO/ISAF expansion across the whole of Afghanistan in October 2006, he was promoted to General for the remainder of his time in the country. General Richards has also served as Chief of Staff of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps and as Assistant Chief of the General Staff. His awards include a Mention in Despatches, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the Distinguished Service Order and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath.
