CNAS Elects Kurt Campbell and Anne Neuberger to Board of Directors
Washington, May 14, 2025, – The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is pleased to announce the election of Kurt Campbell and Anne Neuberger to its Board of Directors.
“We are delighted to welcome Kurt Campbell back to CNAS, and to have Anne Neuberger join our board,” said Michèle Flournoy, chair of the CNAS Board of Directors. “Their exceptional leadership at the highest levels of national security and public service will be a tremendous asset to the Center.”
Dr. Kurt M. Campbell is the chairman and co-founder of The Asia Group (TAG). Prior to re-joining TAG, Campbell most recently served as the 22nd deputy secretary of the United States Department of State, where he played a key role in strengthening America’s diplomatic standing and in modernizing the department to meet enduring global challenges. Before assuming his role at the State Department, Campbell served as the inaugural Indo-Pacific coordinator at the National Security Council (NSC) and deputy assistant to the president at the White House from 2021 to 2024.
Prior to his most recent public service, Campbell was chairman and co-founder of The Asia Group. From 2009 to 2013, Campbell served as assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, where he is widely credited as the key architect of the “Pivot to Asia.” Campbell began his career as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserves, serving on surface ships, at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Advisory Unit. He was also an associate professor of public policy and international relations at Harvard’s John F Kennedy School of Government.
Dr. Campbell has been recognized for his service with the award of the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award – the nation’s highest diplomatic honor. Campbell was recognized by Queen Elizabeth in her list of honors in 2014 as an honorary officer of the Order of Australia and as an honorary companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his support of American relations with Australia and New Zealand respectively. He has also received top national honors from a number of key Asian and European allies.

Anne Neuberger joins the Center’s Board of Directors following her role as deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor in the Biden administration. In that role she had primary responsibility for national policy around cyber and emerging technologies, including quantum, spectrum and advanced telecommunications, and components of AI policy.
Prior to this role, she served for over a decade at the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Pentagon in senior roles where she was responsible for setting strategic direction and guiding operational execution of complex, global operations. At the NSA, she was appointed the civilian deputy director of global intelligence operations. Neuberger also established and led the Cybersecurity Directorate. In 2013, she was appointed NSA’s first chief risk officer. In that role, Neuberger built NSA’s enterprise risk management program and guided the rebuilding of NSA’s private sector and foreign partner partnerships thereafter. She was awarded the DoD’s and NSA’s highest civilian awards, as well as a presidential rank award.
Prior to her government service, Neuberger held several positions related to technology and operations at a large financial services firm. Throughout her government and private sector roles, she continued to devote significant effort to transformative nonprofit projects.
