CNAS Launches AI Governance Forum

Washington, November 30, 2023 — The Center for a New American Security is pleased to announce the launch of the Artificial Intelligence Governance Forum. The forum convenes stakeholders from government, industry, and academia to better understand the risks and opportunities of AI and together develop solutions to harness AI’s potential. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, will chair the forum.

Artificial intelligence has catapulted into the public consciousness, sparking excitement and fear. Tech companies and investors are pouring billions into generative AI, and governments are wrestling with how to regulate AI without constraining innovation. Democratic nations have the opportunity to create a framework for global AI governance and pave the way for a future that seizes AI’s opportunities, like advances in medicine, energy, basic science, productivity, and economic growth, while mitigating its potential risks.

“AI will have profound consequences on all aspects of American society, but AI governance has failed to keep pace with fast-moving technology,” said Representative Krishnamoorthi. “This convening is part of a necessary debate about harnessing the potential of AI while staying true to our values and making sure American research stays at the forefront when it comes to the tech competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China.”

“I’m thrilled with the body of distinguished experts from academia, industry, and the policy community that we have brought together to tackle AI’s challenges,” said Paul Scharre, executive vice president and director of studies at the Center for a New American Security. “Now more than ever, we need smart policies to guide the development of this transformative technology.”
