Kurt Campbell, Michèle Flournoy Named Co-Chairs of CNAS Board of Directors

Dr. Kurt Campbell, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and Michèle Flournoy, former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, have been named Co-Chairs of the Center for a New American Security's Board of Directors.  Dr. Campbell joins Ms. Flournoy, who has served on the CNAS board since May 2012. Both Dr. Campbell and Ms. Flournoy helped found CNAS in 2007 and will be taking on new roles. Dr. Richard Danzig, who has served as the Center’s Chairman since 2009, will remain a member of the board.

"I am thrilled to welcome Kurt back to CNAS as a board member, and I am especially pleased that he and Michèle have assumed leadership of the board during such an exciting time for CNAS," said Dr. Danzig. "Kurt and Michèle are outstanding strategic thinkers, public servants and leaders, and I look forward to working with them, as well as newly appointed CEO Bob Work, to further CNAS’ mission and vision." 

Dr. Campbell and Ms. Flournoy co-founded CNAS in January 2007 and served as the Center’s CEO and President, respectively, until 2009. As CEO of CNAS, Dr. Campbell led the Center’s work on Asia-Pacific security and created its "Natural Security" program, putting energy, climate change and natural resource issues on the map as serious national security challenges. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs in 2009 and stepped down in February 2013 to become Chairman and CEO of The Asia Group, LLC, a business advisory firm focused on providing strategic and investment advice to leading global businesses and investors across Asia.

During her tenure as CNAS President, Ms. Flournoy published extensively on American grand strategy, U.S. military operations and policy in Iraq and pressing national security challenges. She co-authored the highly influential 2008 CNAS report Shaping the Iraq Inheritance. Ms. Flournoy was appointed Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in 2009 and departed her post in February 2012. She currently serves as a senior adviser at the Boston Consulting Group.
