Vivek Chilukuri Named Director of the CNAS Technology and National Security Program

Washington, October 18, 2023 – The Center for a New American Security welcomes Vivek Chilukuri as Senior Fellow and Director of the Technology and National Security Program.

“We are excited to welcome Vivek Chilukuri to the team,” said Richard Fontaine, Chief Executive Officer of CNAS. “His impressive background as a trusted policy expert, both on Capitol Hill and in the State Department, will help advance the CNAS mission of developing bipartisan policies to sustain U.S. technology leadership.”

Prior to joining CNAS, Chilukuri served as a senior staff member for Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Chilukuri’s staff positions included senior policy advisor for technology and democracy, deputy chief of staff, legislative director, and chief speechwriter. During his tenure, he played an integral role in crafting legislation to strengthen America’s technology competitiveness, promote responsible governance for digital platforms and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, and expand access to high-speed broadband through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Chilukuri also served in the Department of State as a policy advisor to the under secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights. Additionally, he worked as a program officer on the Middle East and North Africa team at the National Democratic Institute.

The CNAS Technology and National Security program explores the policy challenges associated with emerging technologies and seeks to provide cutting-edge research on topics such as artificial intelligence, technology strategy, biotechnology, defense technology, critical digital technology, and digital freedom. A key focus of the program is bringing together the technology and policy communities to better understand these challenges and together develop solutions.
