On August 4, 2020, the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) Military, Veterans, and Society Program welcomed Athena Leadership Project directors Jeannette Gaudry Haynie, PhD and Kyleanne Hunter, PhD for a discussion about stories, processes, and policy impacts — and how these have shaped careers, recruiting, and retention. The discussion covered the Women, Peace, and Security Act of 2017, exploring how this has created a crisis for the military, and why gender-based violence in the military should be considered a national security issue.
Discussion panelists included: Fleet Master Chief (Ret.) JoAnn Ortloff, U.S. Navy; Jennie Haskamp, U.S. Marine Corps veteran; LtCol Jessica van Dop DeJesus, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve; and Madeline Feaster, U.S. Coast Guard veteran, each of whom shared her perspective of service within a culture of persistent harassment.
