Elisa Ewers

Former Adjunct Senior Fellow, Middle East Security Program

Elisa Ewers is a Former Adjunct Senior Fellow with the Middle East Security program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), with 20 years of experience in U.S. national security and foreign policy. Her commentary has appeared in such outlets as The Washington Post, Newsweek, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, War on the Rocks, BBC, CNN, The National Interest, and XM Radio. She is also on the adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. She served in both the Obama and George W. Bush administrations, in senior positions including Director for the Middle East and North Africa on the National Security Council; Senior Policy Advisor to the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; Advisor to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs; Chief of Staff to the Secretary’s Special Representatives for Iraq and for South West Asia; Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Near East Affairs; and Senior Advisor embedded with a Department of Defense planning team. Her service also included a 21 month assignment in Iraq. Elisa's public service culminated in selection as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. Prior to her time in government, she worked for almost a decade in the private sector. Elisa also is on the board of directors of the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society.
