Robert Sumner is a space cyber professional working at the intersection of national security, emerging technology, and strategic planning. He currently serves as a Project Leader at the MITRE Corporation, where he leads initiatives that integrate technical analysis, operational insight, and cross-agency collaboration to strengthen space system resilience and support senior-level decision-making. He is also a doctoral candidate at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where his research examines the root causes of perceived cybersecurity stressors in space systems. A former U.S. Army infantry officer, Robert led teams through complex mission sets and worked closely with partners across the Department of Defense. His career spans military service, intelligence operations, and whole-of-government national security innovation, with a focus on advancing strategic approaches to emerging space cyber challenges. Robert holds a Master’s in Space Operations from the University of New South Wales and a Master’s in Cybersecurity Strategy and Information Management from The George Washington University. He earned his Bachelor’s in History from The Citadel and lives in Centreville, Virginia, with his wife.
