Scott Cheney-Peters

Scott Cheney-Peters serves as a civil servant on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), supporting Navy’s representation at inter-service decision forums. Scott is also the founder of the Center for International Maritime Security (CIMSEC) and a Reserve surface warfare officer in the Navy’s strategy office.

From 2006-2008, Scott was forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, as an engineering division officer aboard the destroyer USS Fitzgerald. As the weapons and anti-terrorism officer aboard the amphibious dock-landing vessel USS Oak Hill, stationed in Virginia Beach, Scott deployed to South America for partnership exercises in 2009. In 2010, Scott transferred to Washington, DC, where he served as the editor of Surface Warfare magazine until he transitioned to civil service and the Reserve in 2012.

Scott graduated from Georgetown University with a B.A. in English and Government and holds an M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. He is a member of the Truman National Security Project and prior member of the CNO’s Rapid Innovation Cell, where he worked towards the Navy’s adoption of additive manufacturing uses. Scott researches issues affecting Asian maritime security and national security applications of emerging technology.
