CNAS Launches Task Force on the Future of U.S. Coercive Economic Statecraft
Washington, July 23, 2019 – The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) Energy, Economics, and Security Program today announced the launch of the Task Force on the Future of U.S. Coercive Economic Statecraft. The task force will convene a distinguished group of economic statecraft practitioners, foreign policy experts, and business leaders to discuss developments in sanctions, tariffs, trade controls, and investment restrictions.
As coercive economic statecraft plays an increasingly critical role in U.S. foreign policy, members of the task force will generate analysis and ideas to support the crafting and implementation of sound U.S. coercive economic policies in a series of off-the-record meetings over the next 18 months. Some task force members will also publish commentaries and reports with recommendations for the U.S. administration and Congress. This task force builds on the success of the recently concluded CNAS Future of U.S. Sanctions Task Force, which released its “Maintaining America’s Coercive Economic Strength” report in March.
Ambassador Paula Dobriansky, former Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, and former Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam Szubin will serve as Distinguished Co-Chairs of the task force. CNAS Energy, Economics, and Security Program Director Elizabeth Rosenberg and CNAS Adjunct Senior Fellow Peter Harrell will coordinate the group.
“Refining America’s tools of economic statecraft will play a crucial role in strengthening our global competitiveness for the long-term,” said CNAS CEO and task force member Richard Fontaine. “Under the leadership of its co-chairs and with the coordination of Elizabeth Rosenberg and Peter Harrell, this group will produce incisive ideas for sharpening those tools.”
