Virtual Event | Prepared, Not Paralyzed: Managing AI Risks to Drive American Leadership

Nov 20, 2025
2:00pm to 3:15pm ET

America's artificial intelligence (AI) leadership is driven by the private sector, an advantage the Trump administration has sought to protect through policies prioritizing innovation. Yet AI’s dual-use nature means the same breakthrough capabilities driving economic growth can also enable novel national security capabilities and threats – issues clearly within the domain of the federal government.

With technical expertise concentrated in a handful of private companies and AI capabilities advancing rapidly, how can Washington increase its preparedness for emerging risks without undermining the innovation edge that defines U.S. leadership? What specific approaches would increase the government's ability to identify, understand, and respond to AI risks, while supporting U.S. competitiveness?

Join the Center for a New American Security on Thursday, November 20, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. ET for a panel discussion on policy actions the U.S. government can take to prepare for AI national security risks while enabling innovation. The conversation marks the release of a new CNAS report, Prepared, not Paralyzed: Managing AI Risks to Drive American Leadership. The expert panel will feature:

  • Conrad Stosz: Head of Governance, Transluce. At Transluce, he leads efforts to define standards and best practices for AI evaluations and inform the continued development of AI policy. Stosz was previously acting Director for the Center for AI Standards and Innovation, as well as leading AI policy development in a range of positions in the White House, Congress, and Department of Defense, building on his prior experience as a machine learning engineer
  • Dean Ball: Senior Fellow, Foundation for American Innovation. He most recently served as Senior Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and Strategic Advisor for AI at the National Science Foundation. Previously, he was a Research Fellow in the Artificial Intelligence & Progress Project at George Mason University's Mercatus Center and a Policy Fellow at Fathom
  • Janet Egan: Deputy Director and Senior Fellow for the Technology and National Security Program, CNAS. Her research focuses on the national security implications of AI and other emerging technologies. Prior to joining CNAS, Egan was a director in the Australian Government Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. She was a member of the prime minister’s task force on critical technologies and the inaugural director of policy in Australia’s Office of Supply Chain Resilience

Live viewers will have the opportunity to ask questions during the discussion.
