LCDR Stewart Latwin
Senior Military Fellow
A native of Rye, NY, LCDR Stewart Latwin commissioned from the United States Naval Academy in 2008 and earned his Wings of Gold as a Naval Aviator in February 2010.
LCDR Latwin’s initial operational tour was with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO TWO (HSC-22) in Norfolk, VA, where he served as the squadron’s ground training officer, operations division officer, aircraft division officer, and NATOPS Officer. He deployed twice to the Middle East, on USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8) and USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He completed his department head tour at Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO ONE (HSC-21) in San Diego, where he was the squadron training officer. While at HSC-21, he served as Officer-in-Charge of Detachment Four, deployed on USS Charleston (LCS 18) to the Central and Western Pacific and Indian Ocean Operating Areas.
His shore assignments include Airborne Mine Countermeasures Operational Test Director at Air Test and Evaluation Squadron ONE (VX-1) in Patuxent River, MD; Flag Aide for Commandant, Naval District Washington, Washington, DC; and Action Officer, OPNAV Navy Warfare Branch (OPNAV N5I6), where he oversaw the irregular warfare and graduate education and fellowships portfolios. He is currently serving as the Senior Navy Fellow at the Center for a New American Security.
LCDR Latwin has been awarded various individual awards, including the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards) and Navy Achievement Medal, and has served in units that were awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation and Battle Efficiency awards. He has also appeared on the game show Jeopardy, winning two games. LCDR Latwin graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering. He also holds a Master of Science in Engineering Management from George Washington University.
