  • Press: comms@cnas.org

Maya Wang is a senior China researcher for Human Rights Watch. She has written extensively on the use of biometrics, artificial intelligence and big data in mass surveillance in China. Her most recent research report, China’s Algorithms of Repression, reverse engineers a Xinjiang policing app that connects to the region’s big data platform, the Integrated Joint Operations Platform. The report reveals the designs of Xinjiang’s mass surveillance systems, which use dubious criteria to identify people threatening to the government and send them to arbitrary detention. Wang is also an expert in human rights defenders, women’s rights, disability rights, the use of torture and arbitrary detention in China.
